GURUVAYUR EKADASI

Guruvayur Ekadashi: A Spiritual Celebration in Kerala

Guruvayur Ekadashi is one of the most important and sacred days in the Hindu calendar, observed with great devotion at the Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple in Kerala, India. Ekadashi refers to the eleventh day of the lunar fortnight, and Guruvayur Ekadashi falls in the month of Vrishchika (November-December) according to the Malayalam calendar. It is believed to be the day when Lord Krishna spoke the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra.

Significance

The day is especially significant in the Guruvayur temple because it is considered the Samadhi day of Guru, the preceptor of the Gods, and Vayu, the God of Winds, who according to legend, installed the idol of Sri Krishna at Guruvayur. Devotees believe that fasting and praying on Guruvayur Ekadashi can lead to redemption of sins and help in attaining Moksha (liberation).

Importance

Guruvayur Ekadashi is marked by a high spiritual energy and attracts thousands of devotees from across Kerala and neighboring states. The temple rituals on this day are grand and elaborate, providing a unique spiritual experience.

Rituals and Celebrations

  1. Dawn to Dusk Pooja: The day begins early in the morning and continues until dusk, with various special poojas and rituals dedicated to Lord Krishna. The temple observes continuous prayer sessions, and special offerings are made throughout the day.

  2. Elephant Procession (Gajarajan Guruvayur Kesavan Memorial): Guruvayur Ekadashi also commemorates the famous elephant Kesavan, who served the temple for many years. A grand elephant procession is held, featuring the temple elephants, which are richly caparisoned and paraded around the temple. This procession attracts large crowds and is a significant cultural spectacle.

  3. Chuttu Villakku (Circle of Lamps): On the evening of Ekadashi, the entire temple is spectacularly illuminated with lamps (chuttu villakku). Thousands of lamps are lit around the temple premises, creating a divine ambiance. This ritual symbolizes the removal of darkness (ignorance) and the spread of divine light (knowledge).

  4. Recital of the Bhagavad Gita: Since Ekadashi is linked with the day Lord Krishna imparted the wisdom of the Gita, recitations of this sacred scripture are a core part of the celebrations.

  5. Ekadashi Vilakku: Prior to the Ekadashi, on the Dashami (tenth day), a special lamp (Ekadashi Vilakku) is lit by the chief priest to signal the onset of Ekadashi.

  6. Fasting: Devotees fast from the dawn of Ekadashi until the dawn of the next day, Dwadashi, believing it to bring them closer to divine energy.

Conclusion

Guruvayur Ekadashi is not just a religious observance; it is a vibrant cultural festival that showcases the deep spiritual heritage of Kerala. It offers a profound experience of devotion, rituals, and community spirit, making it a significant day for devotees visiting the Guruvayur temple. The celebration is a profound reminder of the timeless teachings of the Bhagavad Gita and the spiritual ethos that Lord Krishna represents.
